As that market of FTP players shrinks, queue times go up, and the sunk cost, super invested whales will have no one to play against, and then WOTC will have to change their economy to compete ANYWAYS. With every 2 year span, if more and more ccg's have a pretty consumer friendly economy, less and less players will be open to the monetization that Wotc is trying to pull off with arena. The average MTG consumer only spends money for 2 years and then quits it's somewhat of a broad generalization, but let's assume the same is true for other ccg's. I've said this before, but the real danger for WOTC and their bottom line isn't now, but it's in the future. Why does the road to FTP have to run through draft? How can LoR allow players to do well in their version of draft or not and still feel like you are making good FTP progress on making new decks and collecting new cards? There is no reason digital magic has to be even close to as expensive as paper magic, other than Wotc feeling like they have the best game in town and that they can get away with it.Įventually, it's going to bite WOTC in the ass. How can new players get into a game where those are your options? Personally as a new magic player, the concept itself of draft scared me, if I even understood it. Now, WOTC got some of my money, but they sure as hell won't get another dime until they fix this economy that punishes a whale like myself for wanting to spend tons of money with mediocre returns for said money, while at the same time making FTP super hard as well unless you are an above average drafter. And that if I wanted to really be ready to build whatever I want for next standard, and keep up with historic like I was in 2019, I was going to need to spend hundreds more (as someone who is both horrible at draft and doesn't particularly like it). While the gameplay itself wasn't fun for me, the major reason I quit right then was that I truly felt used, spending a hundred dollars in gems like a chump to get not much that I really wanted from my packs. I played one game and that was it, haven't touched it since. This literally happened to me I tried to come back after the 3eferi+ other last ditch standard bans after not playing since February, so I bought some gems to complete a deck.

For the people (like myself) who have already jumped ship to games like Runeterra, once you've experienced a non-predatory/consumer friendly ccg economy the Arena economy is almost impossible to stomach. The reality of the situation for me that is upsetting is that Arena is artificially preventing its own growth there are only so many people who will find magic, love it enough to spend some or any money on arena, and stay to grind and spend more money to play more.
